To ensure that less fortunate children in the rural community are cared for and given educational opportunities
which will enable them to break out of the cycle of poverty.

Local Eco Farm

 An agriculture training center

Why did we create the Eco Farm project?

1-We have limited land and the crops face seasonal problems - needing more water supplies in the dry season while needing to cope with flooding during the rainy season.

In an attempt to solve this problem, we are working towards developing a master plan for an Eco-Farm where we can grow vegetables and fruit and breed fish, frogs and pigs in a push to become self-sufficient. To achieve this goal we need support and donations from schools, institutes, NGOs and charitable people from around the world - your help is very important.

2- Recently some orphanages in Cambodia have had problems with visiting tourists causing some concern about the effect of tourism for the local community. We don’t want the Rainbow Orphanage to become a tourist attraction. But we would like to invite tourists to come and visit, to see what we are doing for the children in our care and see what we are providing for our local communities.

In this way, we would like Rainbow Orphanage to be a place of contact and support for everyone.

- Government figures show that 10 years ago, there were more than 100,000 tourists traveling to Siem Reap to visit Angkor Wat. This figure now stands at more than 2 million each year, with the Cambodian population at 14.2 million. The question is why are the rural villagers getting poorer and not benefiting from the influx of tourism?

- About 30% of our villagers have found refuge in neighbouring countries like Thailand to find work. Why have they moved from their country of birth? And why are they not receiving benefits from tourists visiting their ancient temples?

-The Eco farm project is has been developed to get tourists involved with local villagers. The Eco Farm is focused on educating and training the children and local villagers to produce hand-made crafts and to create local services including ox cart riding, baskets, hats, mats, clothes, bags, stationary covers, passport covers, money bags and much more. So when you come to see us, you can organise a combined visit of both the Eco Farm and the local village which can be arranged through travel agents, hotels, guesthouses and our website. Find out more about tours of the village and Eco Homestay.

For this project, there is no cost for the visit but we request that you purchase 5 kg of rice (priced at USD 2 per person) from our rice miller store to help support the poor families in our villages. Besides that, visitors can buy some of the hand-made souvenirs or enjoy the ox cart services from the villagers which also means that the money spent goes directly to those in need. Lunch will also be provided at a small cost to visitors at the Rainbow Restaurant to support the children.

3-Cambodia’s fruit and vegetables are mainly sourced from neighboring countries with some containing pesticides and harmful chemicals which can lead to bad health. Due to a supply demand, the quality of fruit and vegetables have suffered. At the Eco farm it is important that our fruits and vegetables are organic to provide the children with a healthy source of food. We hope to encourage the villagers to follow suite and begin farming for themselves. We will also help find a market for the sale of their produce.

What the Eco Farm is going to be used for:

- To provide healthy organic fruit and vegetables for the children in residence and villagers.

- To provide year-round nutritious food supplies for the Rainbow Orphanage.

- To provide a source of income through selling some of our produce for villagers and tourists.

- To become an Agriculture Training Center for children and communities that focuses on cropping and feeding.

- To become a center which includes a cow bank and pig bank with the opportunity for sale to villagers.

- To become a center which can provide training for villagers and village children in order to improve their standards of nutrition and health.

- To feed all kinds of village animals to show tourists and overseas volunteers who are interested in finding out more about animals in the local villages.

- To plant all kinds of fruits and vegetables that are suitable for growing in the local area.

- To become a fish station for the rural village to research and teach fish mongering.

When our fish breeding plans are advanced enough to support our orphanage children, we will be able to move towards helping poor families in the surrounding villages – and hence raise their standards of living. These are the aims of our Eco Farm.
